We are seeking a well-presented, friendly and confident Museum Assistant to act as the principle point of welcome for all visitors to our unique 200-year old Museum.
The Unicorn Preservation Society, a charity registered in Scotland, registration number SC002771. We will ensure the conservation and interpretation of HMS Unicorn within a maritime heritage visitor attraction as part of a group within the Dundee Waterfront and the wider Tayside region.
HMS Unicorn is the oldest surviving complete woodened hulled warship in the United Kingdom. Her keel was laid in 1822 and the ship placed in storage in 1824. She subsequently moved to Dundee in the 1870’s and was gifted to the charity by the Ministry of Defence in 1969. The ship has remained in the city ever since. The heritage of the ship is, therefore, largely associated with Dundee and she is an integral part of the history of the town and Scottish naval history.
We are entering one of the most exciting phases in the history of the ship as we engage with funders to achieve significant grants to support the ship being moved from Victoria Quay to the East Graving Dock in Dundee. Over the next few years we should see a remarkable transformation of the ship and quayside helping to secure this important Heritage Asset’s future.
Our Museum Assistant provides a vital first point of contact for all audiences at HMS Unicorn, demonstrating an understanding of and enthusiasm for our unique ship combined with excellent customer service and communication skills.
Act as the principle point of welcome for all visitors to HMS Unicorn handling all enquiries promptly and professionally, and to alert relevant staff promptly of any visitors arriving for meetings
Operating the Front Desk (e.g. monitoring alarm systems, answering the phone, issuing keys, signing-in contractors etc.)
Undertake daily reconciliation and preparation of cash income for banking, and to maintain established audit controls and other related administrative records and controls in accordance with HMS Unicorn procedures
Ensure public areas (front desk, toilets, etc.) are kept clean and tidy. Regularly monitor the condition and cleanliness of front of house facilities, taking corrective action and/or reporting issues as appropriate
To discreetly and sensitively safeguard the security of visitors, staff, volunteers and museum assets, and report hazards, near misses and incidents
Assist with the evacuation of visitors and museum colleagues in the event of an emergency in accordance with evacuation protocols
Attend weekly Operation Meetings and report back to team
Support the delivery of museum events
Work under the instruction of the Operations Manager, the Learning and Engagement Officer, Events Officer and Maintenance Officer as required to ensure that continuity of service is maintained in all museum activities including events
Assist in the delivery of events as required
Adhere to organisational policies, including Health and Safety legislation, and procedures to protect people and the Museum’s reputation
Uphold the Museums Association’s Code of Ethics

The salary for this post is £14,500 annual equivalent. 37.5 per week during summer, 20 hours per week during winter. This is a permanent contract.
The leave year operates from 1st April to the succeeding 31st March and there are 22.5 days of annual leave this includes plus Bank Holidays. Working hours are 37.5 hours per week during the summer period: 1st April – 31st October, Thursday – Monday, 9:00-17:30 and 20.0 hours per week during the winter period: 1st November – 31st March, Thursday – Sunday, 11:00-16:30). Where occasional evening work is required, time off in lieu will be offered. The place of employment will be HMS Unicorn.
The appointment is subject to a six-month probationary period.
Appointments may be terminated by either side in writing by giving a minimum of one months-notice within the probationary period and two months-notice thereafter.
